How Do I Pay?
How do I donate if I can't attend the meeting?
If you can’t attend, you are still expected to make your donation to the selected charity:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- If you are signed up for the semi-annual recurring payment, you will be auto-charged and will not have to do anything
- If you are not signed up for recurring payments, you can use our ONLINE DONATION system to pay with a credit card, bank transfer, or via Paypal. This is explained below.

ONLINE PAYMENT SYSTEM - PAY BY CREDIT CARD, BANK TRANSFER OR PAYPAL
We are pleased to offer an ONLINE PAYMENT system. The payment platform is run by Fundraise UP and supported by ICF (International Community Foundation) which is a US-based 501(c)3 charity so your donation is tax-deductible in the US.
Your cash donation does not give any of your contact information to the charity, thereby protecting your identity, but ICF will provide you with documentation in the form of a US-based tax receipt.

Quick facts about donating on the platform:
- You will be invited by 100 Who Care Tecate to set up an ICF account or you can use any of the "donate" buttons on this website to make a donation.
- There are two ways to pay by credit card. The preferable method is to set up a semi-annual subscription which automatically charges your credit card for every meeting. You are free to change or cancel the subscription at any time. The second option is to go to the ICF website each time you want to pay by credit card and just pay for that meeting’s donation.
- You can also use the ICF platform to authorize ACH direct debit from your bank or pay by Paypal.
- And you can submit your donations to ICF through a Donor Advised Fund (DAF) or Family Foundation. Find those instructions AT THIS LINK
- Preferably, we ask that you donate BEFORE the meeting. It is not necessary to know the name of the charity. The donation goes to ICF, and after the meeting, we will provide them with the names of the three charities we have selected and how much goes to each ($500 each to two of them, the remainder to the third).
- For subscriptions, you will be charged at the time you set up your donation regardless of when the next meeting is, and every six months afterwards. So plan on setting up your first donation close to the time of a meeting.
- For the charity to get your full $200 donation, we are asking you to cover the credit card fee, ICF’s management fee, and a small fee to the Fundraise Up payment platform. ICF’s management fee includes sourcing and vetting local charities, collecting and disbursing funds, and providing us with a US-based tax deduction even though we’re funding Mexican charities. See more detail by scrolling down to the end of this page.
- For tax purposes, you will receive a receipt from 501(c)(3) ICF. The charity will NOT RECEIVE any information about you.
- ICF will make the donations to the charities on our behalf as we direct them.
- Members who are Tecate residents can also pay in cash at the meeting and their cash donations will be presented to the nonprofits in real time. But members who miss a meeting must find an alternate way to make their donation so they are up-to-date. This could be by sending it with another member who is attending, or using the platform to pay by credit card when necessary.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Why can't I just send the donation to the charity myself?
- The goal of 100 Who Care Tecate is to make a large, collective donation that will have an impact on the Tecate community. Individual donations that trickle into a charity will not have the same impact or enable the charity to undertake a major project that they may be able to do with the single, large donation. Also, being part of a collective donation from our circle ensures that individual charities never receive your personal information and therefore, cannot get you on their mailing lists and continue to solicit you for more donations.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Is my contribution tax deductible?
- Yes if you are an American taxpayer. Since your donation is being channeled through ICF, and ICF is a 501(c)3 organization, your contribution is tax deductible. Your credit card receipt from ICF is sufficient documentation of the tax-deductible donation. You may also receive a thank you letter from the charity.

Can you explain the fees connected to the donation?
It would be impossible to manage our circle's donations without these three other players. If we were to personally collect your donations, we would have to declare them as personal income AND you would not receive a tax deduction. While there are no fees or dues associated with being a member of the circle, there are three unavoidable fees associated with each donation so let us explain:
So what should your total look like? With a bank transfer, your total will be $218. If you use Visa, MC or Discover, your total will be about $221. With Amex, your total will be $223. We regret there are fees but are grateful that there are systems In place that allow us to do this good work.
Note that members who are Tecate residents and choose to pay in cash (pesos) at the meeting will not be subject to any of these fees.

While there are no fees or dues associated with being a member of the circle, there are three unavoidable fees associated with each donation so let us explain:
- ICF FEE: This Is a 6% fee we pay to ICF for helping with the vetting of our nonprofits and managing the collection and disbursement of our donations. Their 501c3 status is the reason we can each take US tax deductions for our donations. We could not do this without them. The $212 asked for your $200 donation includes this 6%.
- PLATFORM FEE: Fundraise Up is the 3rd party platform that ICF uses for the actual money transaction, whether it be through credit card (the norm), Paypal, or ACH direct debit from your bank. Fundraise Up charges 2% and provides the web interface that makes it possible..
- PAYMENT PROCESSING FEE; Most donations come via credit card and their fee ranges from 1.5% to 3.5% depending on which card is used. Typical Visa, MC and Discover fees are 2.2% + .30, while Amex fees are 3.5%. There is a .8% fee for ACH direct debit.
